  Writing in the Primary Grades

  • Mini–lessons should come from the kids’ writing; use their work as examples of good writing.

  • Writing and reading are reciprocal.  When teaching kids to write in a certain form, find examples of writing in that form to share.

  • Kids need instruction in both form and function, creativity and structure.

  • Many writing programs lend themselves to various pieces of the writing program; no writing "program" covers all the pieces adequately.

  • In any one class, there are writers at every stage of development, and with many different needs.

  • Don’t teach programs, teach students.
