Kindergarten children write every day, either in their journals
or to illustrate their pictures. With the help of their teachers,
they are practicing sound/symbol correspondence and handwriting.
First grade teachers help their students with editing skills,
getting feed-back from the student and modeling correct spelling
and punctuation.
Second grade boys do a lot of peer writing and editing. They
are able to help each other with research and idea generation,
as well as with editing.
By third grade students are able to do most of the editing
independently, but they often make use of a rubric or peer editing
to make sure they are being thorough.
Even fourth and fifth grade students confer often, both in
the generation stage, during revision, and during editing.
Students have many opportunities to share their research and
writing with an audience.
