Books Concerning Character Education
Contributed by the Character Education Committee

In the fall of 1999 a Character Education committee was formed at University School, comprised of a diverse group of parents, teachers,  administrators, and our consulting psychologist.  The books listed below are recommended by the committee because they deal with the topics of respect and respect for the environment.    The following books are good examples of feeling or showing honor for the environment:

Cherry The Great Kapok Tree
Cherry A River Ran Wild
Cooney Miss Rumphius
DeFelice Lostman's River
George My Side of the Mountain
George Who Killed Cock Robin?
Jeffers Brother Eagle, Sister Sky
Mills Dinah for President
Speare The Sign of the Beaver
Yolan Owl Moon

To respect is to show honor for the worth of someone or something.  The following books illustrate either respect for others or respect for oneself.

Butterworth Leroy and the Old Man
Byars The House of Wings
Cohen No Good in Art
MacLachlan Sarah Plain and Tall
Mathis The Hundred Penny Box
Rathman Ruby the Copy Cat
Stone I'm Glad I'm Me
